Enhancing Clinical Safety and Cancer Patient Experience Through Comprehensive eLearning on Central Venous Access Devices
Introduction:
Central venous access devices (CVADs) are essential in cancer care, providing a reliable means for administering treatments. However, complications are common, leading to increased morbidity and negative impacts on patient quality of life.
Background:
Recognizing the need for improved CVAD management, the Cancer Institute NSW developed an eLearning package through eviQ Education. This comprehensive, peer-reviewed, evidence-based program aims to enhance clinician knowledge and competency in CVAD insertion and maintenance.
Methods:
The development process involved:
- A literature review to identify best practices and current evidence.
- Engagement with vascular access experts to refine the content.
- A Delphi-type method for peer-review, involving three rounds of consultation.
Results:
Since its launch in July 2021, the eLearning package has achieved significant uptake:
- Over 22,000 health professionals completed all three modules.
- More than 50,000 page views on the course landing page.
- 3,241 health professionals completed the course evaluation, with 98% reporting increased knowledge and satisfaction with the course content.
Conclusion:
The eviQ Education CVADs eLearning package has successfully standardized new evidence-based practices, supporting health professionals in delivering safer and more effective care for cancer patients. The flexible, fully digital format ensures accessibility for busy practitioners, ultimately enhancing patient safety and quality of life.
