I-DECIDED®-Brazil: Adapting a Key Tool for Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Assessment and Decision-Making

Introduction
In the pursuit of enhancing patient safety and clinical decision-making, the I-DECIDED® tool has been translated and adapted to the Portuguese and Brazilian context. This blog post summarizes the meticulous process and promising outcomes of this significant methodological research.

Methodology
The research followed Beaton’s framework for translation and cross-cultural adaptation, which includes five stages:

Initial translation
Synthesis of translations
Back-translation
Committee of experts review
Pre-testing

Conducted from July to December 2022, the study involved rigorous data analysis using the Content Validity Index (CVI) and Cronbach’s alpha to ensure the reliability and validity of the adapted tool.

Results
The expert committee’s review resulted in an adapted I-DECIDED® version that achieved strong semantic, idiomatic, experiential, and conceptual equivalence with the original. The tool achieved a CVI of 0.94, indicating high content validity. Pre-testing involved 60 nurses and demonstrated a reliability score of 0.83 for the adapted tool.

Conclusion
The successful translation and adaptation of the I-DECIDED® tool provide Brazilian healthcare professionals with a reliable assessment and decision-making instrument for peripheral intravenous catheters. This adaptation aligns with the commitment to patient safety and enhances clinical practices in Brazil.
